Oden students in Ms. Jackson’s JAG class recently completed the ACT WorkKeys exam, where they earned their National Career Readiness Certificates. This certificate is an industry recognized credential that can aid students in entering the workforce and allowing prospective employers to see what foundational work skills these students already have.

ATTENTION ACORN TIGER FANS:
The softball and baseball games scheduled for tomorrow against Caddo Hills have been cancelled due to the threat of inclement weather.
7th grade students in Mrs. Lyle’s Family CSI class have earned their Babysitting Basics Certification from the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. Students spent last week training to become responsible, caring, trust worthy babysitters. Training topics included ideas to entertain children, how to handle emergencies, first aid & safety pointers, employer expectations, and how to care for children of different ages. The course was led by UofA Extension Agents, Bridgette Martin and Debra Miller.

28 Grants Awarded Will Get Nearly 9,000 Kids Outside
Mena, AR; March 7, 2022 – The National Park Trust announced the first round of grantees for the Every Kid Outdoors Transportation Grants Program and has selected Ouachita River School District in the first round of grant awards. In partnership with the USDA Forest Service, the National Park Trust developed the Every Kid Outdoors grant to support schools and organizations focused on connecting elementary school-aged youth to public parks, lands and waters.
For over a decade, National Park Trust has been a leader in youth outdoor programming and has been actively addressing the lack of transportation to outdoor spaces – one of the most significant barriers to kids getting outside and experiencing nature. This grant supports the Every Kid Outdoors program, a federal youth initiative designed to provide every 4th grader in the United States the opportunity to visit public lands and waters for free with their families. The National Park Trust and the USDA Forest Service understand that the great outdoors is an excellent classroom and hope the experiences provided by this grant program will help kids establish lifelong connections with nature and become the next generation of park stewards.
Ouachita River School District received a $5,000 award to support our work in engaging our 5th and 6th grade students (approximately 100 students) in hands-on learning experiences about our Bald Eagles and other native birds in the state of Arkansas! Students will be participating in activities in class to get geared up to go to Dardanelle State Park to learn even more about Eagles, as well as other birds of prey and mammals native to our area! They will also be hiking trails to discover other natural habitats.

This opportunity was made available to 501(c)3 non–profit organizations and schools from all over the United States looking for resources and funding to connect their community’s elementary school-aged kids with local public lands and waters. The Park Trust and USDA Forest Service awarded 28 grants, up to $5,000 each, to qualified applicants – totaling more than $110,000.

The Acorn Tiger senior boys basketball team left for the 2A State Basketball Tournament in Junction City on Friday, March 4th. In an intense first round of tournament play, the Tigers beat Buffalo Island Central 58 to 51 and advanced to the Final Eight. They will take on the Cutter Morning Star Eagles today at 2:30pm.

5th and 6th Acorn GT students completed a Mystery Classroom this week. They used their skills on specific curriculum and deductive reasoning in order to obtain the clues to figure out which suspect stole the Plague Doctor’s sour apple jelly.
