Acorn Students Experience Careers with Be Pro Be Proud
On Friday, October 20th, Be Pro Be Proud Workforce Training Workshops Mobile Unit set up on the Acorn Public Schools’ campus for a full day of engaging simulations for students to “test drive” and gain experience and knowledge about various careers and occupations.
Be Pro Be Proud Workshop Tour Coordinators Cam Turney and Jimmy Rodden provided an educational tour guide of each simulator experience and trained a group of student ambassadors to partner with students on the simulator stations. AHS Ambassadors included: Harlei McCourtney, Sophie Strasner, Kora Carter, Matthew Lyle, Hunter Neal, Buddy Cusson, Nicholi Carrillo and Noah Holland. The following area business and industry partners joined the students and Be Pro Be Proud throughout the day; John Larucci, RMEC; Steven Holland and Billy Carmack, NIDEC; and David Young, Sterling Machinery.
Cam Turney began the presentation and gave an overview of high demand technical skilled trades’ occupations, training and education requirements to obtain certifications, salary and hiring trends in Arkansas and across the nation with student groups. Turney closed his presentation with his personal testimony and encouraged students to engage in the simulation stations to learn more about their career interests and skills and research options to further their education and training in a skilled trades area. Student groups toured the simulation stations which included; excavation, construction site, plumbing, electrical, commercial truck driving, electrical lineman, robotics, welding, and CNC machining.
During the lunch break, Jimmy Rodden and Cam Turney shared their experiences and engaged in conversation with the student ambassadors about their career interests. One of the highlights of the day included BPBP Student Ambassador and AHS Senior Noah Holland achieving the task of stacking items in a formation on the Tyson Robotics Simulator. Way to go, Noah!
After each student group toured the simulation workshop stations, Rodden and Turney referred students to visit the Be Pro Be Proud website at https://beprobeproud.org/ for more information and to complete the survey. Students were provided a free copy of the Arkansas Next PROS magazine Arkansas next PROS.
Thank you Be Pro Be Proud for coming to Acorn High School to meet with our students and providing such engaging and enriching experiences for our students!
